Smart Buildings

Home automation, or domotics (home automation), is a way to control appliances and functions in a home remotely/automatically. A home automation system will monitor and/or control home attributes such as smart lighting, climate, entertainment systems and appliances remotely. It can also include home security such as access control systems and alarm systems.

What is a smart home?

A smart home refers to a preset configuration where appliances and devices can be automatically controlled remotely from anywhere with an internet connection using a mobile device or tablet. Devices in a smart home are interconnected via the internet, allowing the user to control functions such as home security access, temperature, lighting and a home theater remotely.

Key recommendations:

The smart home allows homeowners to control appliances, thermostats, lights and other devices remotely using a smartphone or tablet over an internet connection;

Smart homes can be set up via wireless or wired systems;

Smart home technology offers homeowners convenience and cost savings;

Smart Home Systems

Smart homes can have either wireless or wired systems – or both. Wireless systems are easier to install. Installing a wireless home automation system with features such as smart lighting, climate control and security can cost several thousand euros, making it easily affordable.

The downside of wireless systems is that you need strong Wi-Fi coverage and broadband service throughout your home. This may require you to invest in range extenders or wired wireless access points. Smart home wireless systems are generally better suited to smaller homes.

Wired systems, on the other hand, are considered more reliable and are usually more difficult to hack. A wired system can increase the resale value of a home. In addition, wired smart home systems can be easily scaled; therefore, it’s often the default method when designing new construction or performing a major renovation.

There is one drawback – you need to have space for networking hardware, including ethernet cables.

How to create a smart home

Heating

Smart home products now allow greater control over heating devices, including when products are turned on, off and controlled. Smart products can be armed with temperature or humidity sensors to turn on or off automatically if certain criteria are met. This line of smart home innovations extends to air conditioners.

Smart lighting

Lights can be turned on and off, placed on a schedule or set to change according to sunrise or sunset times.

This lighting category can also include smart home products that control or prevent light. Automatic blinds can be installed and set to close according to the sunrise program.

Audio/Visual

One of the more entertaining aspects of smart homes, many entertainment products are now highly connected and can be controlled with a single remote.

Security

Many products now have camera capabilities to track motion, capture video or enable live video streaming.

Many smart homes are also serviced with modern security kits. These include motion-sensing detectors when homeowners aren’t home, home monitoring, notifications and alerts of suspicious behavior, and the ability to lock doors or windows remotely using a phone.

Other services

These products are often interacted with using your voice and can take commands, ask questions, organize your calendar, schedule phone calls or provide alerts. While not specifically related to the home, these digital assistants offer a wide range of smart asset and program control.

Smart smoke and carbon monoxide detectors not only sound an alarm, but can be synchronized with your phone to alert you if you’re away from your property.

Automated irrigation systems have the ability to be programmed to work at certain times of day. Now, smart irrigation systems consider climate and environmental conditions a factor that incorporates these features into existing water schedules. Smart irrigation systems monitor moisture-related conditions and strive to save water and electricity.

What are the pros and cons of smart homes?

Pro

They are often more convenient than traditional methods of programming, controlling or accessing products remotely;

It can enhance security with notifications or alerts;

Provides multiple ways to perform a task (for example, lights can be turned on or programmed manually);

It can lead to long-term cost savings when energy efficiency is taken into account.

Against

It can pose a security risk because products are connected to networks and can be hacked;

They are often more expensive;

It can lead to a steep learning curve, especially for those new to technology.

How smart homes work

The devices in a smart home are connected to each other and can be accessed through a single central point: a smartphone, tablet, laptop or console. Door locks, TVs, thermostats, thermostats, home monitors, cameras, lights and even appliances like the refrigerator can be controlled through a single home automation system. The system is installed on a mobile or other networked device, and the user can create time schedules for certain changes to take effect.

Smart appliances come with self-learning abilities so they can memorize the homeowner’s schedule and make adjustments as needed. Smart homes enabled with light control allow homeowners to reduce electricity consumption and benefit from energy cost savings. Some automation systems also alert the owner if movement is detected in the home while they are away, while others can directly call the authorities – police or fire brigade – in case of an imminent situation.
